Currently, parties that have expressed readiness to join the government being formed by Prime Minister candidate Andris Kulbergs ('United List') are invited to submit their proposals for the declaration of the new government and discuss them on Friday, May 22.
Although formal negotiations were not held on Thursday, possible redistribution of responsibilities was discussed in the corridors, the LETA agency found out. For example, the leadership of the Ministry of Finance may go to the 'United List', as this ministry is usually headed by the party of the Prime Minister.
LETA is aware that currently, in informal negotiations regarding the distribution of responsibilities, the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF) insists on retaining the ministries it oversees, namely, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Welfare, and the Ministry of Climate and Energy. At the same time, the UGF is allegedly ready to give up leadership of the Ministry of Climate and Energy during the negotiations.
Given that the 'Progressives' are not participating in the formation of the new government, the posts of ministers of transport, defense, and culture remain vacant.
It is also known that the National Alliance could take over the leadership of one of the power ministries, such as the Ministry of Defense or the Ministry of the Interior. However, usually, these ministries are not headed by the same political force simultaneously. The National Alliance could take responsibility for the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Culture.
In turn, the 'New Unity' party is still discussing which areas of responsibility this political force could retain or take on.
As reported, after the resignation of the government of Evika Silina ('New Unity'), President Edgars Rinkēvičs entrusted the formation of the new government to Kulbergs ('United List').
On Wednesday evening, a basic agreement of the potential new government was signed, which will serve as the basis for further negotiations on the upcoming work. It also became known that positions could be divided on the principle of equality - each party could receive an equal number of posts.
On Wednesday, 'New Unity' decided to participate in the forming government if an agreement on the upcoming work is reached. Thus, the new government may include 'United List', 'New Unity', National Alliance, and the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF), which will ensure the necessary majority in the Saeima.
The agreement signed on Wednesday evening focuses on the tasks to be performed during the work of the 14th Saeima, with a particular emphasis on security, financial stabilization, and fiscal discipline.
