The Saims has given the green light to a bill aimed at ending the Russian language in public media.

Today, the deputies at the plenary session first agreed to include an additional "language" bill on the agenda, and then voted for its consideration in the Saims committee. The amendments were prepared by representatives of the right-wing opposition - the National Alliance and the United List. The essence of the amendments is to implement the decision of the Constitutional Court to effectively remove the Russian language from public media. In essence, Russian content remains, albeit in a significantly truncated form, only on the public media portal. If the amendments are adopted by the Saims, the native language for 37 percent of the population can be used in public media, as explained from the podium by Deputy Edvards Smiltenš, only as an exception. This conclusion was preceded by a passionate speech from the podium, where he quoted the Russian ideologist Dugin.

"It is very hard to believe that 36 years after the restoration of freedom and independence, after the vote on May 4 in this hall, after the withdrawal of Russian troops, our accession to the European Union, NATO, the UN, OECD, after the decision on the education system in the Latvian language, after the referendum on the Russian language as official in Latvia, after the demolition of the occupation monument, in the fifth year of war, when Russia brutally tears apart and destroys Ukrainian land and people, and threatens the Baltic states with the same, when Alexander Dugin, the strategic ideologist of the Russian world and Putin, has repeatedly stated very clearly and openly: the Russian language is the foundation of Russian identity and geopolitical influence. The territories of the former USSR, where the information space of the Russian language is supported, in this ideology have the borders of Russia. Independent Latvia is merely a temporary historical misunderstanding. This is what "Alexander Dugin" says. And after all this, we still debated and fought over whether the Russian language is mandatory or not in independent and free Latvia in Latvian public media — 36 years after the restoration of independence!" Smiltenš lamented.
