The Saeima committee is considering a record number of proposals for the new Immigration Law.
Janis Dombrava, a member of the Saeima from the National Alliance, is outraged that part of his amendments to the new immigration bill were not supported by the Defense and Internal Affairs Committee. Notably, during the third reading, a record number of amendments were submitted by deputies and ministers - 175!
"While I am on a business trip, the Defense Committee has rejected several proposals that would strengthen the responsibility of entrepreneurs and universities for violations related to the employment of foreigners. Shouldn’t the interests of state security be the top priority for the members of the defense committee?" Dombrava lamented on social media.
In particular, the majority of deputies rejected Dombrava's amendment, which stipulates that in the event of the cancellation of a visa issued to a seasonal worker or a work visa issued to a foreigner, because the employer has been penalized for violations related to the employment of workers or tax payments, or the entrepreneur is not conducting commercial activities, has been declared insolvent, or insolvency proceedings have been initiated against the entrepreneur, the inviting party is responsible for paying compensation and fulfilling other remaining obligations that they would need to comply with if the visa for seasonal work had not been canceled."
Deputies believe that the entire responsibility for the actions of a migrant worker cannot be placed on the entrepreneur.
