We Were Lied To. Pensions Are at Risk” - Economist Acknowledges Upcoming Crisis in Latvia

On the TV24 channel in the program Kur tas suns aprakts?, economist and entrepreneur Jānis Ošlejs called the claims that it would be possible to do without having children a great lie. Such rhetoric poses a threat to pension payments.

Children may have once been important in the past to ensure our pensions, but nowadays, there is supposedly no longer a need for that, - such assurances sometimes resonate in the public space. However, according to economist Ošlejs, people now see that the opposite is true: the need is actually greater now because, in the current demographic crisis, it is hard to imagine how pensions will be paid out in the expected amounts.

This way of thinking, the economist believes, must change, and he hopes that in the coming years it will change and people will have more children. The broader question is how to make people believe in this strategy?

The strategy must be aimed at increasing the wealth of Latvia; everyone can associate this with themselves - we all work together as a united society to be more prosperous and wealthy, he believes.
