Silina cannot refuse Trump. But she also decided not to send the Latvian army to the shores of Iran for now

The Prime Minister of Latvia demonstrated wonders of political acrobatics. To a clear question, she managed to say neither "yes" nor "no."

Is Latvia ready to participate in clearing the Strait of Hormuz of Iranian mines and missiles? Estonia, for example, is ready. But what does the Latvian government think?

Currently, Latvia has not received any requests from the United States regarding operations in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz for global oil exports within NATO. However, if such a request were to come, it would be taken very seriously, Prime Minister Evika Silina told reporters on Tuesday.

What the outcome of such consideration might be – a refusal to Trump or an agreement to assist a powerful ally – Silina did not say.

However, the Prime Minister expressed support for all that is good and opposition to all that is bad: Latvia, of course, supports the quickest possible unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. She noted that events in this region and the accompanying rise in oil prices affect everyone – both entrepreneurs and residents, making this issue relevant.

However, since Latvia has not received such a request, all discussions about how it could or could not help remain mere speculation.

As previously reported, U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Sunday that NATO faces a "very bad" future if allies do not help unblock the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, Trump also stated that he expects assistance from France and the United Kingdom in ensuring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran is currently trying to block.

Most NATO countries have refused Trump.
