The Legionnaires' Memory March in Riga Concluded Without Incidents

The march held today in Riga in memory of Latvian legionnaires who died in World War II concluded without incidents, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.

According to police estimates, around 200 people gathered for the march.

The State Police, along with other institutions, continues to maintain heightened control over public order and safety throughout Latvia today, operating in accordance with the plan.

Every year on March 16, events are held in Riga and Lestene in memory of Latvian legionnaires who died in World War II.

Legionnaires' Memorial Day on March 16 is an unofficial day of remembrance. Some believe that the legionnaires hoped to fight for an independent Latvia, others that they were fascist collaborators, and others still that they were victims of war who found themselves on the front lines against their will.
