Latvia finds itself in an extremely vulnerable position in global politics, and it is not worth expecting miracles from national diplomacy. This opinion was expressed by political commentator Jurģis Liepnieks, commenting on the current instability of the global system.

The situation in foreign policy for Latvia remains extremely complicated, and it is not worth expecting any miracles from national politicians. This was stated by political commentator and writer Jurģis Liepnieks on the program "Kārtības rullis" on TV24.

"Foreign policy is, of course, very difficult. It is obvious that our situation is extremely vulnerable, we are not an influential country, and we should not expect any blue miracles from our politicians either," noted Liepnieks. He emphasized that the situation should be compared with neighboring countries — Lithuania and Estonia:

"If we compare with our neighbors — and it is correct to compare specifically with Lithuania and Estonia — we do not see that they have any significantly greater foreign policy successes."

Liepnieks also pointed out that Latvia is not participating in a number of important international formats. According to him, the country is not included in the new security plan led by France, related to nuclear deterrence. At the same time, he mentioned that Latvia has agreements with Scandinavian countries, for example, on evacuation plans in case of crisis situations. However, relations with the United States, in his assessment, currently appear uncertain. "With America, we seem to have no relations at all," he stated.

The expert believes that this situation is linked to broader changes in global politics. "We live in a time when the old world system has collapsed, and the new one has not yet formed," noted Liepnieks. According to him, the international agenda today largely depends on the position of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

"The agenda is determined by how Mr. Trump woke up in the morning and what he decided to do today," said the expert.

"Mr. Trump is not particularly predictable, so he is a complicated partner — and not just for us," emphasized Liepnieks. As a result, in his opinion, the world today is in a state of uncertainty. "In this world without rules, without clear understanding and order, we certainly cannot do very much, even if we want to," he concluded.
