Russia continues to strike Ukraine, supports Iran's attacks on countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, and destabilizes Africa, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said on Monday in Brussels at the meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council.

As reported to the LETA agency by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Braze reminded that Russia's attack on the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Station in Ukraine led to an oil spill in the Dniester, creating a direct threat to the water supply and health of the population of Moldova.

"Russia is our common problem, and its actions continue to cause a global security crisis. All allies and like-minded countries must increase pressure on Russia - impose new sanctions, including urgently approving the 20th EU sanctions package, and more actively countering the Russian shadow fleet," the minister stated.

In addition, it is necessary to continue the international isolation of Russia, prevent its access to Western technologies, sever trade ties, and prevent circumvention of sanctions, Braze added.

Together with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, the heads of the foreign ministries of EU countries discussed the situation at the front, Ukraine's priority needs, and developments in the Middle East, the MFA reported.

Braze urged all EU countries to continue comprehensive support for Ukraine by contributing to the NATO PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) mechanism, designed to provide critically needed military equipment. So far, Latvia has contributed 17.2 million euros to this mechanism.

Additionally, Braze met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and discussed the further development of the strategic partnership between the EU and India, the foreign policy and security priorities of both sides, as well as the situation in the Middle East.

With European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Petr Serafin, Braze discussed Latvia's priorities in the next multiannual EU budget, including strengthening the eastern border, which is a security issue for the entire European Union.

EU foreign ministers discussed the security situation in the Middle East and the role of the European Union in the region, cooperation with the EU's southern neighbors following the Mediterranean Pact coming into force last November, as well as the EU's security strategy.

As reported, the EU Foreign Affairs Council is considering issues related to external activities, including common foreign policy and security policy, European security and defense policy, external trade, and development cooperation. The main task of the council is to ensure the unity, consistency, and effectiveness of the EU's external activities.
