At the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU and Gulf countries regarding the situation in Iran and the Middle East, Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže emphasized that Latvia firmly condemns Iran's unprovoked attacks on the countries of the Middle East and the Gulf, the LETA agency reported from the Ministry.
According to the minister, these attacks pose a threat to regional and international peace and security, violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region. The foreign ministers of the EU and Gulf countries also adopted a joint statement.
Braže noted that Latvia expressed its strong condemnation of Iran's unprovoked attacks on countries in the Middle East in the UN Security Council.
"Latvia fully stands in solidarity with the Iranian people and the peoples of the countries affected by Iranian attacks. We highly appreciate the resilience of the Middle Eastern region and the Gulf countries in repelling Iranian attacks. I informed the ministers of the Gulf countries about Latvia's achievements in drone technology and that we can offer our counter-drone systems to the countries in the region," said Braže.
According to her, the current priority is the protection of civilians, preventing a broader regional conflict, and further escalation of the situation. She emphasized that stability in the region is essential for global security.
Braže also noted that Iran has long been deliberately destabilizing the Middle Eastern region and the world, including directly supporting Russia's war in Ukraine. Iran uses Shahed drones for attacks in the Middle East and Gulf countries - the same ones it provided to Russia for its aggression in Ukraine.
The minister emphasized that Iran systematically violates its international obligations and threatens international peace and security. For decades, it has supported, armed, financed, and trained terrorist groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The Iranian regime has openly continued its illegal nuclear program despite repeated diplomatic efforts by the EU, the UK, and the US, Braže reminded.
The ministry recalled that Latvia has repeatedly condemned the actions of the Iranian regime, including its refusal to cooperate with the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding its illegal nuclear program.
Latvia joined the EU's joint statement on the situation in the Middle East. Latvia is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region and is in constant contact with embassies, EU countries, and other nations, the ministry noted. Since February 28, Braže has held phone conversations with the foreign ministers of Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
