Latvia condemned the 'Maduro regime' and supported the 'people of Venezuela' at the UN Security Council

At the UN Security Council, Latvia pointed out the repression of the Maduro regime and expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela.

Latvia calls for de-escalation and stability in Venezuela based on dialogue and broad public support, emphasizing that international law and the UN Charter must be upheld under any circumstances, said Latvia's Ambassador to the UN in New York, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, today at a UN Security Council meeting.

She noted that the UN Security Council bears responsibility for global efforts to maintain peace, security, and the rule of law, and urged all participants to prioritize diplomatic efforts to shape a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future for Venezuela.

Latvia expresses solidarity with the people of Venezuela and respects their right to freedom and democracy. The ambassador emphasized that this right was not upheld in the 2024 presidential elections and remains unfulfilled.

Pavļuta-Deslandes also noted that the regime of Nicolás Maduro, relying on mass repression, corruption, and organized crime, including drug trafficking, poses a serious threat to the security of the region and the world, and systematically violates the UN Charter and international law, including supporting Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

The Maduro regime does not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people and employs widespread and systematic repression that violates human rights to maintain power throughout the country, noted Pavļuta-Deslandes, adding that since 2014, about eight million Venezuelans have been forced to leave the country.

Furthermore, the ambassador confirmed Latvia's readiness to continue working with partners to combat global networks of organized crime, including in Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizing that long-term cooperation with full respect for international law is necessary to overcome these challenges. Latvia will continue to closely monitor the situation in Venezuela and is ready to support a peaceful, democratic, and just transition that aligns with the aspirations of the Venezuelan people, she concluded.

Earlier, it was reported that on Saturday night, the United States unexpectedly carried out airstrikes on several targets in Venezuela. On Saturday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the country's authoritarian leader Maduro and his wife had been taken out of the country and would stand trial in New York.
