What’s yet to come: the president assessed the work and challenges of the coalition

The coalition parties — 'New Unity', 'Progressives', and the Union of Greens and Farmers — should have an honest discussion after the budget is adopted about whether they can work together, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics in an interview with LTV on the program 'Morning Panorama', LETA reports.

In response to the question of whether the government led by Evika Silina ('New Unity') can work constructively until the next elections, Rinkevics noted that the first challenge will be the adoption of the budget for the next year. In his opinion, after this, the parties should have an honest conversation among themselves — whether they can or cannot work constructively until the next elections.

"The most foolish thing would be to pretend that we are working for ten months while actually doing nothing, which will ultimately affect both the development of the state as a whole and the parties themselves, which voters may critically assess in the next elections," the politician stated.

Speaking about the widely observed intolerance in society, Rinkevics emphasized that this cannot be solely attributed to the behavior of politicians — it is a problem for the whole society. According to him, he does not have a clear advice on how to reduce it.

The president acknowledged that the spikes in aggression are somewhat related to the spread of social networks, whose perceived anonymity "gives courage" to some people to express aggression. At the same time, he reminded that life is not limited to social networks and consists of other problems.

Rinkevics suggested that as the elections approach, the exchange of opinions may become even sharper.
