Juris Maklakov, former commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia (2006–2010), warned in the TV24 program “Person of the Day” that Russia's recent nuclear tests are an alarming signal for the whole world, which could lead to serious escalation in the field of international security, writes LA.LV.

Maklakov stated that Russia has tested both a missile with a nuclear engine and a torpedo.

“After this test, America also announced the need to resume nuclear tests. This is definitely a significant step towards increasing international tension,” he noted.

According to the former commander, if real explosions begin — on the surface or underground — it will be a very alarming signal, as it has been possible to refrain from such steps for a long time, which he considers positive.

“Real nuclear tests have not been conducted yet, but discussions about this are already underway, and this will clearly lead to nothing good,” emphasized Maklakov.

As previously reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated earlier that Moscow successfully tested an underwater drone with a nuclear warhead powered by nuclear energy. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered the Pentagon to begin nuclear tests alongside China and Russia.
