So, today the Saeima began discussing the budget for 2026 and the main parameters of the budget for 2026, 2027, and 2028 during an extraordinary plenary session. There are no plans for night vigils, as in previous years - the budget debates are supposed to conclude today by 21:00 at the latest. If the deputies do not finish the debates and manage to vote on the adoption of the budget for 2026 in the first reading, that is, conceptually, by that time, then a break will be announced until tomorrow. The likelihood of such a scenario - that is, postponing the session until tomorrow - is quite high, as by the time of preparing this material, the list of those signed up already included 36 speakers - alongside deputies, there are also the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Smart Administration and Local Government Affairs. At the same time, the leaders of parliamentary factions have already spoken, and the budget project was presented by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance.
No sensational developments are expected at this stage - ultimately, the Saeima majority will vote for the approval of the budget for 2026 in the first reading today or tomorrow. After that, the deputies will be given time to submit proposals (amendments) to the budget project. The main intrigue is whether the "green farmers" will start to "rework" the budget, who have recently played the role of internal opposition in the government. It is planned that the budget will be adopted in its final reading in the first days of December.
