The National Alliance supports the President's call to pass the decision on the Istanbul Convention to the next Saeima - meaning that the deputies of the current composition will refrain from resolving this issue.
The National Alliance supports the call of the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, to continue the consideration of the Istanbul Convention in the next Saeima, the party informed the LETA agency.
An extraordinary meeting of the Saeima has been convened on Wednesday, November 5, at 9:30, where the issue of transferring the law on the denunciation of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, known as the Istanbul Convention, to the committees will be decided. This law was returned to the parliament for reconsideration by President Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The National Alliance supports the possibility of transferring the decision on the denunciation of the Istanbul Convention to a nationwide vote and intends to seek ways to prevent ideological risks and ambiguous interpretations of certain articles of the convention in constructive discussions. The party reaffirms its commitment to eradicating any violence in Latvian society, as stated in the press release.
Previously, the law was considered in the Saeima Committee on Foreign Affairs, where the majority consists of deputies from parties that supported the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, and the committee is chaired by the opposition representative from the National Alliance, Ināra Mūrniece. Extensive debates are not expected at the upcoming meeting, as the procedure does not provide for them.
The President called on the deputies to pass the decision on this issue to the next composition of the Saeima, which will be elected in less than a year.
As explained on the parliament's website, if the law is sent for reconsideration, the Saeima, without debate, sends the President's motivated objections to the committees and sets a deadline for proposals to be submitted, after which the law is reconsidered.
The reconsideration is conducted in accordance with the procedure provided for the third reading of the bill. During the reconsideration, the parliament only considers the President's objections and proposals related to his remarks. If the Saeima does not amend the law, the President will no longer be able to challenge it again.
