Opponents of the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention promise to continue the struggle.

"The parliamentary majority fell for the dangerous initiative of the Kremlin and populists. The 'New Unity' faction is using all the constitutional means available to protect the residents of Latvia from violence and to uphold our belonging to the European space of values. The struggle is not over yet," stated the head of the 'New Unity' parliamentary faction, Edmunds Jurēvics.

Opponents of Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention - the deputies of 'New Unity' and 'Progressives' - are apparently planning to send a letter to the president in the coming days, requesting not to proclaim the law, which, let us remind you, was adopted yesterday by the Saeima in an urgent manner with 56 votes.

If Edgars Rinkēvičs decides not to proclaim the law, which is unlikely, he will need to justify this legally and propose appropriate amendments. If the Saeima rejects these proposals from the president, the head of state will not be able to object a second time.

There are two more options for 'fighting' the bill: filing a complaint with the Constitutional Court and suspending the law for two months to collect signatures in support of a referendum on this issue. However, for the president to suspend the law's entry into force, 34 deputy signatures must be collected. As of yesterday, the opponents of the bill only had 32 votes.
