On Wednesday, the Ministry of Defense will sign a contract with the German company "Dynamit Nobel Defence" (DND) for the purchase of remote mining systems worth 50 million euros, announced Minister of Defense Andris Spruds on the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama."
According to him, these systems will allow for the rapid deployment of mines on the Latvian border, thereby strengthening the Baltic defense line. This is part of a joint defense plan that also includes the acquisition of obstacles and sensors that will be placed near the border, said Spruds.
According to the Minister of Defense, the contract with DND for 50 million euros includes the supply of mines. In the coming years, even more mines will be purchased, for which funds have already been allocated.
Spruds added that the purchase from DND is the first significant investment specifically in remote mining systems. Considering that the amount of 50 million euros is substantial, local industry participation is also anticipated, the minister added, without specifying how this will be reflected in this particular procurement.
