About 500 citizens of Russia did not submit applications to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) for a further residence permit in Latvia after the legally established deadline, so they will have to leave Latvia, according to initial information from the OCMA.
According to amendments to the immigration law from June 20 of last year, Russian citizens who had been permanently residing in Latvia before obtaining Russian citizenship and who received permanent residence permits were required to submit documents to the office to obtain EU permanent resident status, including a certificate of passing the state language test.
Based on the amendments to the immigration law, 841 Russian citizens had their permanent residence permits expire, as they did not submit documents for EU permanent resident status by June 30.
Therefore, on July 18, the OCMA sent letters to these individuals notifying them of the need to leave Latvia by October 13 or to submit documents for EU permanent resident status or another type of residence permit.
Of the 841 people who were sent information letters, 358 responded and submitted applications for a residence permit, the LETA agency was informed by the OCMA.
The submitted applications do not mean that the residence permit will be granted automatically, as their documents will be reviewed by the OCMA and the Security Police.
Information about the 483 individuals who did not submit applications will be sent to the State Border Guard for verification. After the verification, those individuals who did not leave Latvia will be invited to the OCMA to receive an exit order.
The OCMA assumes that some of these 483 individuals have already left Latvia, while others will submit applications for a residence permit in the coming days.
More accurate information may emerge in the near future.
