The mayor of Ogre called for total resistance to aggressors in the event of war.
The mayor of Ogre, Egils Helmanis, shared his thoughts on the "defense concept" on the pietiek.com portal. He believes that we should not hide from the enemy, but rather offer desperate resistance. Here are the most striking excerpts from Egils Helmanis's recommendations (National Alliance):
"The Russians have announced a fall mobilization. They want to draft more than 100,000 soldiers. Russia can no longer exist without war. It can no longer take a pause. Any pause is a new beginning of war. Are we ready for this?
The priority that should be addressed is not total hiding, but how we will defend our country, palace, village, street, and home from the occupiers. Total resistance to the occupying power...
We must create the opportunity for anyone willing to defend the country with arms in hand to be able to buy this weapon right now. At the beginning of the war, I tried to ensure that the Ogre municipality could purchase bulletproof vests. Four years have passed, and nothing has been done to allow us to do this legally. This bulletproof vest is a good indicator of how four years can pass with talk and nothing being done in the government.
I would like to say that a change of focus is needed. It is not us who are going to hide, but we are going to defend every square centimeter of Latvia.
The government must answer the following questions. What is our resource to defend Latvia? How many people can we gather who are willing to do this? Are the USA ready to defend Latvia? Will NATO invoke Article 5? Can the Slovaks, Hungarians, and others block it? Are European countries ready to fight Russia for Latvia? If you cannot answer these questions, then it is time to prepare the people to defend their country.
During the war, I have been to Ukraine 20 times. In one village like Suntazi, the Russians sent 35,000 soldiers. We must understand: in order to defend our country, we need to create such a defense that from every window of the house, we shoot at the occupiers.
If we cannot answer all the previous questions, then we need to prepare our people. Not to hide, but to resist."
