On June 21, 2026, the day of the solstice, which marks the longest day of the year in our Northern Hemisphere, Orthodox Christians remember the martyr Theodore Stratilates. It was customary to start digging wells on this day, which is why he received the nickname Well-Digger.

What is Remembered in the Church on June 21, 2026

Theodore was born in the late 3rd century in the city of Euchaïta (territory of modern Turkey). He was a brave warrior, and in addition, handsome, intelligent, merciful, and devout. For his kindness, the Lord granted him perfect knowledge of Christian truth. The warrior from Theodore also became incredible — he became widely known when he killed a huge serpent that was devouring animals and people in the vicinity of Euchaïta.

Theodore armed himself with a sword and, with prayer, managed to defeat it. For his military bravery, he was appointed as a military commander (stratilates) in the city of Heraclea. But he always combined military service with apostolic preaching, even during that time.

Under the pagan emperor Licinius, he fell into disfavor. He then invited the emperor to Heraclea, promising a grand pagan celebration. He demanded that wealthy pagans gather golden idols, but when Licinius arrived, he shattered them all and distributed the pieces to the poor.

Then Stratilates was captured and tortured almost to death. However, his wounds miraculously healed. He managed to come down from the cross on which he was left overnight, expecting to die. However, he then voluntarily went to execution, opening the prison doors with just a glance, and the crowd surrounding him was healed from various ailments merely by touching him. Then Theodore was beheaded with a sword.
