Scientists have found that some common foods can provide significantly more benefits to the cardiovascular system than previously thought. Researchers particularly recommend paying attention to berries, fruits, legumes, and green tea.
Researchers from the University of Reading have found that a number of common foods can significantly impact heart and vascular health. The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Food & Function.
During the study, specialists analyzed the dietary habits of more than 30,000 residents of the UK and the US. The data obtained showed that many people do not consume enough flavanols — natural compounds that are linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The foods richest in flavanols were found to be cranberries, green tea, cherries, plums, blackberries, beans, and apples. According to the scientists, increasing the intake of these beneficial substances does not require a radical change in diet. It is sufficient to regularly include small portions of berries, fruits, legumes, or to drink a cup of green tea.
The authors of the study also noted that for health, not only the overall volume of vegetables and fruits in the diet is important, but also their specific composition. Some foods contain significantly more biologically active substances that can support the functioning of the heart and blood vessels.
In the researchers' opinion, the common recommendation to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day may need clarification. It is much more beneficial to focus on foods rich in flavanols and other protective compounds.
Experts emphasize that a balanced diet remains one of the most important factors in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Properly selected foods can serve as an additional tool for maintaining health alongside physical activity and the abandonment of harmful habits.
The study showed that even small changes in daily diet can positively affect the condition of the heart and blood vessels. By adding cranberries, apples, beans, berries, or green tea to the menu, one can increase the intake of beneficial flavanols and support the health of the cardiovascular system.
