On Tuesday, massive power outages occurred in the eastern part of Latvia. According to network operators, about 61,000 customers were left without electricity in several regions and part of Riga.
On Tuesday around noon, massive power outages were reported in the eastern part of Latvia, according to the LETA agency citing data from the joint stock company "Sadales tīkls".
According to information on the company's website, more than 1,700 outages were registered in the Rezekne region, and over 1,500 in the Gulbene area.
According to "Sadales tīkls", a technological failure occurred in the 110-kilovolt high-voltage power network at 12:15 on Tuesday. This affected the power supply of approximately 61,000 customers.
The disruptions impacted the Aluksne, Preili, Daugavpils, Jekabpils, Smiltene, Sigulda, and Kekava regions, as well as part of Riga.
Emergency crews from the joint stock companies "Augstsprieguma tīkls" and "Sadales tīkls" began work to localize the damage and restore power supply.
The causes of the accident are still being investigated.
The outages occurred against the backdrop of a tense situation in the eastern regions of the country. Earlier on Tuesday, warnings about a possible threat in the airspace were once again sent out in the Ludza and Kraslava regions, and in several regions of Latgale, the centralized exam in the Latvian language for ninth graders had to be interrupted. Later, a warning about a possible threat was also sent out in the Madona region.
