The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania plans to build a field camp with barracks for Bundeswehr soldiers costing around 20 million euros near the military town in Rudninkai, which will be able to accommodate 1,000 people at the same time.
Design is planned to start in early summer, and construction is set to begin at the start of next year.
As reported by BNS, the advisor to the Minister of Defense, Robertas Kaunas, stated that the area of about 7 hectares in the southern part of the military town, which is being developed on the basis of a public-private partnership and costs one billion euros, will be developed and financed separately, with investments in the project potentially amounting to around 20 million euros.
"The camp is part of the military town. (...) This project will be developed separately with funding from the state budget allocated to the Ministry of Defense," noted Aistė Žilinškienė in a comment to BNS.
"According to preliminary estimates, investments may amount to around 20 million euros. The exact amount will be determined after the preparation of project proposals," she added.
According to Žilinškienė, the activities in the camp will depend on the decisions of the German brigade: "The camp can serve various functions, such as providing temporary housing, administrative and training facilities."
According to the minister's representative, the contract for the design is planned to be signed in June, and the project is to be prepared within seven months: "The exact duration of the construction works will be known after the preparation of project proposals."
According to the documents, it is planned to build eight barracks with an area of 1,600–2,000 square meters, a parade ground of 1,800 square meters, an officers' club building, a gym, a container storage area, a car wash, an administrative building, a cafeteria, a medical point, and a warehouse, an armory, as well as three vehicle sites.
As noted in the documents, about 1,000 people can be accommodated on the premises at the same time.
But this is just the beginning!
The total cost of the second phase of the military town project will amount to 1.33 billion euros (including VAT) – it includes not only the design and construction of infrastructure over 2.5 years but also its maintenance and services for 12.5 years, as well as financing costs.
According to the Ministry of Defense, during the second phase, residential buildings, garages, workshops, cafeterias, warehouses, parade grounds, headquarters, and fuel stations will be built for the military. Training buildings are also planned, some of which will be equipped with modern simulation training systems.
The military town in Rudninkai will occupy an area of 190 hectares. It is being constructed in connection with Lithuania's desire to host a German military brigade by the end of 2027.
