Ukraine did not intentionally direct its drones towards Latvia, claims Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga on X. Sibiga had a phone conversation with his Latvian counterpart Baiba Braže, during which they discussed the recent incursion of drones into Latvia's airspace.
As Sibiga noted, Ukraine maintains close contact with Latvia, and the competent authorities exchange information to clarify the essence of what happened.
"If it is confirmed that these were Ukrainian drones that were deliberately diverted and directed towards Latvia by Russian electronic warfare means, we will sincerely apologize to our Latvian friends.
What can be stated with complete confidence is that Ukraine has never directed any drones towards Latvia," he emphasized.
The Foreign Minister reminded that Ukraine had previously apologized to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland for unintentional incidents involving drones.
"Our specialized agencies are closely cooperating to minimize the risk of similar incidents occurring again," Sibiga added.
He also reported that at the request of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is considering sending its experts to provide direct assistance in strengthening the security of the airspace of the Baltic countries in light of such incidents.
As reported bb.lv, on May 7, unknown drones entered the airspace of Latvia from the territory of Russia. They were not officially identified as Ukrainian. The Ministry of Defense used the phrasing – "most likely" Ukrainian.
