Weather Swings in May: From Warmth to Coolness in Just a Few Days

May in Latvia will start with a sharp increase in temperature, but then the summer-like warm days will be replaced by cooler weather, forecasters predict.

According to the latest data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the first day of May will be quite sunny, with more cloudy weather expected in the eastern part of Latvia, where light rain is possible in some areas. With a light to moderate west or northwest wind, the air temperature will warm up to +14...+19 degrees, and in some places in Kurzeme and Zemgale, thermometers may reach +20 degrees, while along the coast, temperatures will fluctuate around +10 degrees in some areas.

Saturday is forecasted to be dry and mostly sunny, with a light to moderate west or southwest wind. At night, the air will cool down to +2...+7 degrees, and during the day, temperatures will reach +18...+22 degrees, with cooler weather persisting on the western coast of Kurzeme and the northern coast of Vidzeme.

On Sunday, an atmospheric front may cross Latvia from the northwest - brief rain is possible in many places, with thunderstorms also likely in some areas. Before the arrival of the front, warming up to +23 degrees is expected in most parts of the country.

The reliability of forecasts for the following days is low. According to current data from ECMWF, from May 4 to 6, air temperatures in Latvia may even reach +25 degrees, but on the remaining days in the second half of next week, temperatures may not exceed +15 degrees, with frost possible at night.

No heat records are expected at the beginning of May, except for records on May 2 and 3 in Kolka - +20.9 and +18.2 degrees, respectively. At other observation stations, the heat record for the first days of May is +24...+29 degrees. The highest air temperature recorded in the country during the first days of the month, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, was +29.4 degrees on May 2, 1977, in Mersrags.
