Harald Brauns on Pietiek.com talks about a blogger from Africa who runs a TikTok under the name "Jojo Travels" and aims to visit all countries in the world. So far, he has visited about 15 countries, and unfortunately, one of them was Latvia. What outraged Harald?
In his first video about Latvia (March 30), he showed the Freedom Monument and wrote that it was the "worst place" he had been. According to him, from the very beginning, he felt like an unwelcome guest. In one of the stores, he allegedly was refused to be sold a product, which he interpreted as an act of racism, after which he decided to cut his trip short.
Both his video and the explanation from the saleswoman are available online.
In the blogger's recording, he can be seen trying to buy alcohol. He speaks in English, pointing to a bottle, but the saleswoman responds that she does not understand and ultimately asks him to leave. He exits the store and tells the camera that he encountered racism, noting that he had not faced such a situation before.
However, there are no explicit statements or actions in the video that directly indicate racial discrimination.
In the comments, users were divided. Some Latvians apologized to the blogger and expressed regret that he had such an experience. Others doubted his interpretation and suggested that the conflict could have been a simple misunderstanding due to language.
The blogger himself claimed in the comments that the saleswoman had been irritated from the very beginning and pointed to the door. As a result, he began filming what was happening.
Later, the saleswoman shared her version. According to her, she does not speak English and could not explain that alcohol in the store is sold only for consumption on the premises, not for takeout. Because of this, the situation escalated, and she asked the visitor to leave the premises.
Ultimately, the blogger concluded that he encountered racism, while the other side considers what happened to be a misunderstanding.
