Several dozen Muslims praying on Ilukstes Street in the Riga neighborhood of Plavnieki caused quite a stir in Latvian social media.
As reported bb.lv, today several videos made by residents of Riga appeared online, capturing a mass prayer of Muslims on the pedestrian sidewalk in Plavnieki. Here are some comments on the posts with these videos:
Lato Lapsa: I have traveled a lot around the world, seen many things, and written about ten books on travel. I have only one thing to say: all people are good, but there are two deadly diseases in the world. All forms of communism and this one. If they are allowed, both can only be cured in one way. It is better not to allow them.
Aivars Jurkalns: Are there examples of successful treatment in the last hundred years? As far as I know, these diseases always win. Because they are driven into exhausted and backward societies. Latvia, having lost more than 30% of the most active part of society and destroyed the education system, is just such a country.
Ilze: We urgently need to agree on acceptable public manifestations of Islam in Latvia. Do we allow Muslim women to wear headscarves? Where? Everywhere? Do we restrict and prohibit them in schools, public institutions, armed forces, etc.? Do we allow such prayers? Do we prohibit them?
Janis Kukainis: This needs to be stopped immediately! The State Police and the Municipal Police – who agreed to this?!? This is open aggression against the local population and our culture!!!
Dziparins82: They are not doing anything bad, they do not drink, do not smoke, and work hard on construction sites, unlike local idlers and drunks!
Susuris: Repatriate everyone! If you found out why and how long they have been here, wonders would be revealed!
Kristina Jansone: They can do whatever they want in their country, but Latvia is a Christian country (a country free from other religions).
Aivars Borovkovs: They already have their own ministry and a couple of parties. It seems irreversible.
Dace Lindberga: As long as we are alive, we must do everything to stop this progressing nightmare of unity in all spheres!
...In the end, many commentators descended into internal political squabbles – nationalists blamed “New Unity,” supporters of the ruling party tried to pin nationalists to the pillory. The “green farmers” also got their share. But the biggest backlash was directed at the “progressives.” The Muslims were somehow forgotten...
