Russian opposition figure Garry Kasparov stated that a new defense alliance may be forming in Europe that will respond to potential threats from Russia faster and more independently than the existing NATO mechanisms.
Garry Kasparov stated that there may already be informal agreements on joint defense in Europe, although no official announcement has been made about the creation of a new military bloc.
According to the opposition politician, the reason for this is the growing doubts among European countries about the speed and readiness of the United States to respond to potential threats in the region.
In an interview with the YouTube channel “Khodorkovsky LIVE,” Kasparov noted that during the Cold War, the military power of the United States was considered the main factor in deterring the Soviet Union.
However, he said, the situation has changed now.
“There is no trust in the Americans. It is clear that under Trump, America will at least delay the question of participation in hostilities,” Kasparov stated.
He suggested that in the event of a possible Russian attack on the Baltic states, decisions regarding a military response would be made significantly faster and directly on the spot.
As an example, Kasparov mentioned Estonia and Latvia, where NATO allies' contingents are stationed.
According to him, the British and Canadian forces located there will act in crisis situations together with local armies, without waiting for lengthy approvals at the NATO level.
This primarily concerns the British contingent in Estonia and the multinational NATO brigade led by Canada in Latvia.
Against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine and regular incidents involving drones near the borders of the Baltic states, the issue of regional security has become particularly sensitive in recent months.
In Europe, there is an increasing discussion about the need for a more independent defense system capable of responding to threats without lengthy political procedures.
At the same time, Kasparov emphasized that his conclusions are based not on official statements but on indirect signals and public statements from representatives of the region's countries.
“We do not know everything for sure, but the fact that a new defense bloc is forming that responds to specific current problems is a fact,” he stated.
In recent months, discussions about the future of European security have noticeably intensified against the backdrop of doubts regarding the further role of the United States in NATO and the possible return of Donald Trump to power.
