The collection of sand and dust left after winter has begun on the streets of Riga

Since last week, the collection of sand and dust left after winter from the streets of Riga has been underway, the LETA agency was informed by the external communications department of the Riga City Council.

Various equipment is used for street cleaning, as well as manual labor. The work will continue until all roadways and sidewalks are completely cleared, the city council promised.

Bridges are mainly cleaned at night to avoid obstructing traffic. For the same reason, the main arterial streets are also cleared at night, the council noted. Streets in residential areas are cleaned during the day.

To prevent dust clouds from forming during cleaning, equipment with moisture control is used in dry weather. A total of 18 units of such equipment are involved in cleaning the sidewalks in the city.

Combined equipment is used for cleaning pedestrian zones, which allows for the collection of both large and small debris, the council reported. The work is carried out on weekdays.

The municipality also reports that smaller equipment is used in Old Riga, capable of cleaning the narrow and small sidewalks of the historic part of the city.

This winter season, nearly 27 tons of anti-slip material, including salt and sand, have been distributed to the population.
