On Tuesday, the new Liepaja Prison at 29 Alsungas Street began operations, the Ministry of Justice informed the LETA agency.

Throughout the day, all prisoners from the former Liepaja Prison were relocated to the new facilities.

The old Liepaja Prison is closed, and as a structural unit of the Prison Administration, the prison continues its activities in full at 29 Alsungas Street.

The Ministry of Justice and the Prison Administration expressed gratitude to the State Police and other services for their cooperation, as well as to the residents of Liepaja for their understanding regarding the temporary traffic restrictions in the city.

It was previously reported that the new prison is intended exclusively for men and for prisoners from Kurzeme and nearby regions.

The new Liepaja Prison has a capacity for 1,200 inmates. The complex consists of six buildings, with a total area of 305,116 square meters and approximately 37,400 square meters of facilities.
