Latvians have started buying less food but more medicines

Last year, the turnover of retail enterprises in Latvia, according to seasonally adjusted data, grew by 1.5% in comparable prices compared to 2024, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau.

Retail trade in food products saw a decrease of 1.8%, while the turnover of retail trade in non-food products, excluding automotive fuel, increased by 4.1%, and trade in automotive fuel rose by 0.4%.

In December 2025 compared to December 2024, retail trade turnover increased by 0.8%. In food trade, the growth was 0.2%, in non-food products, excluding automotive fuel, it was 1.2%, and in automotive fuel, it was 0.6%.

Compared to December 2024, the highest turnover growth was observed in retail trade of pharmaceuticals and medical goods at 13.2%, household appliances at 8%, and information and communication equipment in specialized stores at 6.8%. A decrease in turnover was recorded in the segment of cultural and recreational goods at 9%, clothing, footwear, and leather goods at 7.1%, and metal products, tools, construction materials, and plumbing at 3.6%.

The overall turnover of retail trade at actual prices, without accounting for the influence of calendar days, increased in December 2025 compared to December 2024 by 3.2%.
