A Battalion Can Be Recruited: The Number of Latvian Citizens Settled in Venezuela Counted in Riga

The number of Latvian citizens in Venezuela has slightly decreased since 2019, according to information provided by the Office of Citizenship and Migration (UCM).

According to publicly available data from the Office of Citizenship and Migration (UCM), as of July 1, 2019, 344 Latvian citizens indicated Venezuela as their place of residence, while on July 1 of the previous year, the number was 303.

As of July 1 of the previous year, Venezuela ranked 35th in the number of Latvian citizens among a total of 160 foreign countries that Latvian citizens indicated as their place of residence.

It was previously reported that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were kidnapped by Americans last week and taken to New York, where they were promised to be tried.

The Venezuelan government still considers Maduro, captured during a U.S. military operation, the legitimate president of the country.

According to the Venezuelan constitution, in the case of the president's permanent absence, the vice president assumes his duties and must organize new elections within 30 days.

It is still unclear whether the new leadership considers the current situation a permanent absence of the president.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez took the oath as interim president on January 5 and stated that she would cooperate with Washington.
