Discussions about the fate of the monument to writer Andrejs Upitis in Kronvalda Park in Riga have been ongoing for several years, public media report.
Recently, the council of residents of Skrīveri in the Aizkraukle region proposed a new initiative to relocate the monument to its native town of Upitis - Skrīveri.
"In fact, we want him to come back home, where on one side of the monument we could write about this outstanding literary figure, and on the other side of the monument - pose questions and discuss him as a politician," said council representative Lelde Sotniece.
According to her, the residents of Skrīveri have already expressed specific ideas regarding the location of the monument: "One place for the monument could be in the park where celebrations are held, and he could once again observe them here, at the edge, as in the old days. But there was also another idea - we would meet at the very top of the hill, so he could see everything from above again."
The municipality emphasized that any decision regarding the relocation of the monument must be made legally correctly and socially understandably. Although ideas have been expressed in Riga about dismantling, cutting, or relocating the monument to another place, the National Heritage Board believes that the monument has artistic value.
The Riga City Council has not yet made a final decision on this matter.
