The Education and Science Workers' Union has succeeded in ensuring that the increase in teachers' salaries will resume in January 2027, rather than in September, as previously planned by the Ministry of Education. Union leader Inga Vanaga called this decision optimal in a broadcast on Latvian Radio, reports LSM+.
Previously, the union was dissatisfied with the decisions of the Ministry of Education. Now it has submitted for approval a schedule for increasing teachers' salaries, starting from January 1, 2027. According to Inga Vanaga, the reached decision is a reasonable compromise, so the union is satisfied with the result:
"Having evaluated all the pros and cons of each of the proposed options, which the ministry calculated and provided us with data very promptly, we still decided in favor of having the salary increases starting in January 2027, with a salary increase of 5.75%. This increase averages 100 euros to the minimum wage each year. In some years, it is slightly more than 100 euros, in others, slightly less than 100 euros."
