Former president Vaira Vike-Freiberga celebrated her 88th birthday on December 1, but the touching congratulatory posts on social media were overshadowed by rumors that her husband Imants Freiberga (91 years old) had been placed in a nursing home, reports nra.lv citing "Kas Jauns."
Last week, Vaira Vike-Freiberga thanked everyone who congratulated her on her 88th birthday and sent kind wishes. However, even under this post on Facebook, there were unflattering comments urging the former president to "better visit her husband in the nursing home."
In recent weeks, any Facebook post quoting Vaira Vike-Freiberga's words or featuring an interview with her, and even birthday congratulations, immediately receives comments accusing Vaira Vike-Freiberga of having "placed her husband Imants in a nursing home."
Someone "learned" that her husband was taken to a medical facility, and now the former president "can afford to hire a caregiver."
To find out how her father is doing and whether his stay in the nursing home has indeed come to an end, journalists reached out to Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Imants Freiberga's son, Karlis Freiberga. When he was called and asked if he could dispel the rumors circulating in society regarding his father — how he is feeling, what his health condition is, and whether it is true that he ended up in a nursing home and requires medical supervision — Karlis Freiberga, upon hearing this, replied: "Thank you for the call, I will discuss this with my family."
The next morning, a text message arrived: "Hello! In response to your call yesterday, I contacted my family members. We agreed not to comment on my father's situation for the press. Sincerely, Karlis."
