The Air Force Received Giraffe 1X Radars for Airspace Surveillance

On Wednesday, Giraffe 1X radars for airspace surveillance arrived at the National Armed Forces (NAF) base in Lielvarde, the Ministry of Defence reported to the LETA agency.

The equipment was ceremoniously handed over to the National Armed Forces (NAF) by the Ambassador of Sweden, Daniel Olsson, and representatives of the Swedish company "Saab".

For security reasons, the ministry cannot provide information on the expenses.

The "Giraffe" 1X radar is an airspace surveillance radar system designed to ensure ground-based air defense. The radar provides high-quality target detection, including drones, missiles, and mortar shells, allowing for instant and effective responses to threats and changing combat conditions. The radar is mobile and can be deployed in any terrain depending on operational necessity.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds noted that these radars will significantly enhance Latvia's ability to timely detect and neutralize threats in the airspace. They are modern, highly reliable, and have already proven their effectiveness in practice during joint exercises with Latvia and its allies.

The "Giraffe" 1X radars, produced by the Swedish company "Saab", are already part of the equipment of the NAF of Latvia and were first used by the Air Force during the "Baltic Zenith 2023" exercises. The contract for the procurement of additional radars was concluded in December 2024.
