Clearer clarity on the dismantling of the railway on the eastern border is expected at the beginning of next year, stated Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs on Wednesday after a conversation with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (‘New Unity’), commenting on this issue.
“We cannot exclude any option in strengthening national defense and security, but such decisions must be made by determining both the timelines and the scope of work, as well as assessing what this means from various socio-economic aspects,” emphasized Rinkēvičs.
The discussion about dismantling the section of the railway on the border with Russia is currently mainly unfolding on social media, where parties also take positions for and against. “A lot of emotions, little rationality,” Rinkēvičs characterized these discussions.
However, among decision-makers, no deeper discussion on this topic will take place before next year. As there is no clear plan, talks on this subject are merely causing anxiety among residents, the president noted.
“It is bad when there is a lack of details and clarity, which causes society to be unnecessarily alarmed. In Riga, something is being said, while people in Latgale do not know — this leads to concern and misinformation,” stated Rinkēvičs.
As reported by bb.lv, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa stated that the issue of dismantling the railway tracks at the Russian border needs to be coordinated with the Baltic countries, as well as with Poland and Finland.
