In Latvia, about 95% of the road works planned for this construction season have already been completed, said Martiņš Lazdovskis, chairman of the board of the State Joint Stock Company "Latvian State Roads" (Latvijas valsts ceļi / LVC), in an interview with the LETA agency.
He acknowledged that this construction season was challenging primarily due to weather conditions. "Compared to last summer, which was very favorable for road work, this year presented many challenges, especially in Vidzeme and Latgale," noted Lazdovskis.
He also reported that the largest construction works this year were carried out in the vicinity of Daugavpils, as the reconstruction of the four-lane section of the Daugavpils Highway (A6) began, and concerns arose in mid-August about completing the construction on time.
The head of LVC noted that about 95% of the work planned for the season will be completed. However, there will be two or three sites that were planned to be finished this year but will not be fully completed. One of them is the section of the Vidzeme Highway (A2) in Sigulda, where part of the work has already been completed, but on the section passing through the Lorupes ravine, the top layer of asphalt will have to be laid next year.
He also mentioned that there may be sections on the Rezekne Highway (A12) where work will have to be postponed until next year. Additionally, this year it was not possible to start one project aimed at improving road safety on the Jelgava Highway near Branki, where there is a "black spot" and, despite speed limits and the presence of a radar, accidents continue to occur.
"Therefore, a transport interchange will be built there, but there has been a delay in property acquisition," added Lazdovskis.
In conclusion, he noted that despite the difficulties, the road work season was overall quite successful.
