All residents registered in Jūrmala, whose cadastral value of housing does not exceed the established threshold, will receive a 90% discount on property tax starting January 1, the Jūrmala City Council decided on Friday, LETA reports.
As reported to the LETA agency by the municipality, the discount will apply to real estate or its part if the tax is calculated for housing with a cadastral value not exceeding 56,915 euros.
The municipality informs that there are currently 22,000 residential properties in Jūrmala where the city's residents are registered. In 89% of cases, the cadastral value of these properties does not exceed the specified 56,915 euros.
Residents of Jūrmala are already receiving a 90% discount on the tax for the land they own, but from next year, the discount will also extend to housing.
As noted by former Jūrmala mayor Gatis Truksnis, legislation prohibits municipalities from setting a tax rate of 0%, so a decision was made for the maximum possible discount at this time — 90%.
The tax discount is provided for in the mandatory rules "Procedure for Granting Property Tax Benefits in the Municipality of the State City Territory of Jūrmala" and will come into effect on January 1 of the following year.
