There is no reason to believe that people in Latvia cannot learn the Latvian language, stated Foreign Minister Baiba Braže on Thursday during the parliamentary debate on the government's report regarding the progress in preserving the state language.
According to her, since taking office in Prime Minister Evika Siliņa's government, the focus of her and the diplomatic service has been on the security of Latvia, economic growth, support for Ukraine, and assistance to the people of Latvia both within the country and abroad.
Braže noted that Latvia is the only country in the world where the Latvian language can continue to develop, and no one else will protect it. She emphasized that even during the years of occupation, diplomats in exile continued to work in the Latvian language, preserving the continuity of the state and the language.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that after the restoration of independence, the diplomatic service helped attract international funding and support for Latvian language education, which contributed to a broader understanding and support for strengthening the language in the education system.
She reminded that more than 420,000 compatriots live outside Latvia, and supporting the diaspora and Latvian language education is one of the priorities of the diplomatic service. The Latvian language is taught in schools and universities of the diaspora in Europe, America, and Asia, including in Korea and Japan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that, for example, students in Korea and Japan can learn the Latvian language, and there is no reason to think that this is beyond the capabilities of the residents of Latvia.
Braže added that the Latvian language is the foundation of our identity, and this is understood by the aggressor state Russia, which seeks to restore its empire and erase the identity of the Ukrainian people. She noted that the Ukrainian language is banned in the occupied territories of Ukraine - the same policy of Russification that Latvians were subjected to. She assured that the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to protect the Latvian language and refute Russia's lies about Latvia.
