An 118-year-old man from Brazil has been declared the oldest person in the world. This was reported by the Daily Star.
The authorities of the country stated that Luis Carlos dos Santos from the city of Eloy Mendes, Minas Gerais, was born on February 15, 1908, making him the oldest person on the planet. He has been living in a nursing home since 1971. This is confirmed by records and testimonies from former staff. The man is mute, although his medical records do not indicate any injuries or congenital diseases. However, he understands what is being said to him and responds with gestures and nods.
The organization Rank Brazil managed to gather Santos's documents: birth certificate, work permits, and others. According to company representatives, they confirm Santos's incredible age. According to the records, he worked on a farm his entire life, never left his hometown, was never married, and had no children. The supercentenarian does not suffer from chronic diseases, feeds himself independently, and remains an avid smoker.
Staff at the nursing home reported that Santos adheres to a strict daily routine. He has breakfast at seven in the morning, lunch at eleven, and dinner at five in the evening. He drinks three cups of coffee a day. Additionally, Santos always sleeps sitting up. The man enjoys collecting beautiful stones. His caregivers reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Santos did not get sick and tried to help the staff care for other residents.
According to the Daily Star, the Guinness World Records has not yet begun the process of verifying information about Santos.
