The number of cases of the rare eye disease – uveitis associated with tattoos – is increasing, and in some cases, it can lead to partial or complete blindness, reports The Independent.
How Tattoos Affect the Eyes
According to specialists, tattoo inks may contain toxic substances that can sometimes provoke a dangerous immune response in the body.
The immune system may perceive the pigment as a threat and attack it, causing inflammation not only in the skin but also in other parts of the body, particularly in the eye.
As a result, damage to the uveal layer may occur – the middle layer of the eye responsible for focusing. Symptoms include pain, redness, and sensitivity to light. In severe cases, this can lead to glaucoma or damage to the optic nerve – conditions that threaten blindness.
The Number of Cases is Rising
A 2025 study recorded 40 new cases of the disease in just two years – from 2023 to 2025.
Overall, the number of such cases worldwide has doubled since 2010. Although the disease remains rare, scientists are already calling it a potential public health problem.
Symptoms may appear months or even years after getting a tattoo. The greater risk is associated with larger tattoos and black inks.
Who is at Risk
The most vulnerable are people with immune system disorders, particularly:
- patients with multiple sclerosis;
- individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases;
- those with sarcoidosis.
Uveitis affects both men and women equally.
Treatment is Not Always Effective
Mild cases are treated with steroid drops, but injections of medications directly into the eye and prolonged therapy with immunosuppressants are often required.
Despite treatment, about 75% of patients experience temporary vision loss, and 17% face permanent loss. Complications such as cataracts and glaucoma are also possible.
When to See a Doctor
Doctors urge immediate consultation with an ophthalmologist if the following symptoms appear after getting a tattoo:
- swelling or inflammation of the skin;
- eye pain;
- redness or worsening vision.
