The trichologist recommended washing the comb at least once a week.
If a comb is not washed regularly at least once a week, a huge amount of bacteria, sebum, dust, and dead skin particles accumulate on its bristles, said trichologist-dermatovenerologist Yulia Markova.
"Sebum, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands, serves as a nutrient medium for bacteria, especially when mixed with dust and dead skin cells, forming clumps and clogging pores," the specialist added, comparing a dirty comb to a toilet rim.
According to her, during combing, bacteria get onto the skin of the face, which can lead to clogged pores, inflammation, and the appearance of pimples and blackheads. People with oily and combination skin are most susceptible to these problems.
In this regard, Markova recommended washing the comb at least once a week with warm water and mild shampoo or special cleaning products for hairdressing tools. It is also advisable to avoid storing the comb in damp or dirty places.
