Italy is focusing on control, safety, and planning.
Sirmione on Lake Garda attracts millions of tourists every year. However, the narrow streets and limited space can no longer cope with the influx. On peak days, such as Easter, up to 70,000 people arrive here daily.
Moreover, constant traffic jams and crowded passages hinder not only guests but also local residents. Thus, the municipality has decided to change the access system to the historic center.
This is about the fight against overtourism — a situation where the number of tourists exceeds the city's capacity. In Italy, such measures are already being implemented in Venice and other popular locations.
When and How the Old Town Will Be Closed
The main change concerns motor vehicles. During the high season, the historic center of Sirmione will be closed to cars for 31 days, as well as on public holidays. The restriction will be in effect from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
According to Garda Post, the authorities aim to reduce the load on the streets and enhance safety. Emergency corridors for ambulances and fire services will remain clear.
Buses by Reservation and Alternatives to Cars
The rules for tourist buses will change. Now operators are required to book parking spaces in advance, for example, at the Monte Baldo parking lot. This will help control the flow of groups.
In addition, the city is betting on alternative transport. A free shuttle will continue to operate from the Grifo parking lot, located outside the old town, until the evening. This parking area is primarily intended for hotel guests in the historic center.
Tourists will also be able to use electric golf carts. This mode of transport reduces noise and lessens the burden on narrow streets.
Enhanced Control and Street Tutors
The authorities are expanding control over compliance with the rules. The so-called Street Tutors will be more present on the streets. These are private security personnel who monitor order and regulate the flow of people.
Their task is to inform tourists. They also have the right to intervene in case of violations. Thus, the city hopes to respond more quickly to overloads.
Support for Residents and the Sirmione 2030 Strategy
Special attention has been given to local residents. The authorities have increased the number of parking spaces reserved specifically for them.
Additionally, the administration is working on improving access to the docks and is considering additional boat routes. This should relieve the central streets.

All measures are part of the long-term Sirmione 2030 strategy. For the first time, the municipality is using detailed data on the distribution of tourists throughout the day. As a result, the authorities can accurately see peak hours and adjust measures accordingly.
Mayor Luisa Lavelli emphasized that the goal is not to reduce tourism but to manage it. Thus, the city is focusing on control, safety, and planning.
Overtourism at Lake Garda: What It Means for Tourists
Travelers will need to plan their visits in advance. There will be fewer spontaneous trips by car to the center. However, in the end, the vacation may become calmer and more comfortable.
Sirmione remains one of the most beautiful places on Lake Garda. Nevertheless, the city now clearly indicates that mass tourism must operate under rules.
