The American short film "The Singers" based on Turgenev's story won an Oscar.

The film "The Singers" by American operator and director Sam A. Davis won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film. This was reported by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on its official website.

Davis's short film is based on a story by the Russian classic Ivan Turgenev. The writer is credited as the sole author of the project's screenplay.

"The Singers" (1850) is a story from Turgenev's cycle "A Month in the Country," which tells of a singing competition between Ryadchik and Yashka-Turk in the tavern of the village of Kolotovka. The work reveals the depth of the Russian soul and the beauty of folk song. The winner is Yashka, whose talent evokes genuine admiration and tears, emphasizing the power of art.

In turn, Riga recently renamed Turgenev Street to Wilhelm Purvitis Street (along with several other streets) - thus, the Latvian capital is getting rid of the names of Russian poets and writers, conducting a de-Russification.
