The production company Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced their collaboration on a new theatrical production titled The Popinjay Cavalier, based on a play by Quentin Tarantino. The title of the play can be translated into Russian as "Самодовольный кавалер", as the rarely used word "popinjay" in modern English means a dandy or braggart.
The project is described as "an adventurous comedy in the spirit of swashbuckling tales." According to the official synopsis, the action of the play takes place in Europe in the 1830s. The story revolves around a series of deceptions and disguises. The creators call the production a festive love letter to the theater and its romantic atmosphere, told in Tarantino's signature style with characteristic humor.
The premiere of the play is scheduled for early 2027 in London's West End. Sonia Friedman Productions is known for a number of successful theatrical projects, including "Paddington: The Musical" and "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."
It became known last summer that Tarantino was working on a play for the London theater. At that time, the director stated that the text was already ready and that the play would be his next project. According to the director, working on the production could take him from one and a half to two years. Rumors also emerged that the director planned to move his family from Israel to London, but his wife, Daniella Pick, denied this.
Tarantino's next film project is likely to be a film based on his script "The Adventures of Cliff Booth." David Fincher is set to direct the project. There is a possibility that the film will be presented at the Venice Film Festival in August 2026.
