Gita Gandbhir will direct a documentary about Whoopi Goldberg. It will also showcase behind-the-scenes footage of her Broadway solo show "Monologues of Whoopi" for the Lincoln Center.
"Whoopi Goldberg is a brilliant storyteller who has shaped the landscape of the entertainment industry for many years. <...> It is a great honor for us to bring her story to life in this documentary," commented Gita Gandbhir.
Whoopi Goldberg is known for films such as "Sister Act," "The Color Purple," and others. In 1990, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Ghost," becoming the second Black woman to receive this award after Hattie McDaniel in 1940. Goldberg is also an EGOT winner—besides the Oscar, she has been honored with three major American awards, including a television Emmy, a music Grammy, and a theater Tony.
Director Gita Gandbhir, who previously directed "The Perfect Neighbor," is working on a documentary about actress Whoopi Goldberg. This was reported by Variety.
The title of the upcoming project is still unknown. According to the publication, it will be based on Goldberg's autobiography "Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother and Me." As Variety writes, the film will focus on a personal view of the comedian and actress's life, tracing Goldberg's path to success. The film will also showcase behind-the-scenes footage of the Broadway solo show "Monologues of Whoopi" for the Lincoln Center, which is set to premiere at the end of summer.
The film will also tell about the actress's collaboration with producer Tom Leonardis, with whom she has worked for over 30 years, and the development of her new theater projects. Additionally, the film will show how the actress spends time with her family and her newborn great-grandson. The project will be produced by Imagine Documentaries and Message Pictures in collaboration with One Hoe Productions.
Whoopi Goldberg (1955) has been married three times: to Alvin Martin, the father of her only daughter Alexandra (1973), to photographer David Kassan (1988–1990), and to businessman Michael Trachtenberg (1994–1995). She is also rumored to have had several common-law marriages and relationships, mainly with Hollywood actors and other film industry figures: Frank Langella, Ted Danson, Timothy Dalton, Eddie Gold.
The actress became a grandmother for the first time at 34 when her daughter Alexandra gave birth to a girl, Amara, at the age of 16. In addition to Amara, she has two other grandchildren.
Goldberg does not hide her radical social views, openly criticizing the conservative actions of the U.S. administration and the Republican Party, advocating for equality of cultures and religions, and the legalization of same-sex marriage. In 1998, she published a book titled "Book," where in her characteristic eccentric manner, she mocks the hypocrisy of modern society, which hides behind a mask of political correctness.
