The dentist advised changing your toothbrush every one to three months.

If a toothbrush is not replaced on time, the quality of oral cleaning significantly decreases, said dentist-therapist, periodontist Irina Seregina.

According to her, with regular use, the brush gradually loses not only its neat appearance but also the elasticity of the bristles. Over time, it begins to remove plaque less effectively and can turn into a breeding ground for bacteria. As the dentist noted, worn bristles clean the surface of the teeth less effectively and can injure the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, thereby provoking inflammatory processes.

"The optimal replacement period for a toothbrush is considered to be between one to three months. This rule applies to both regular manual brushes and replacement heads for electric and sonic models. The maximum usage period is three months; however, in some cases, it is necessary to replace the brush earlier," the dentist advised.

Reasons for early replacement of the brush include having had colds or infectious diseases to reduce the risk of re-infection. Additionally, according to the doctor, the brush should be replaced if the bristles become deformed, if there is plaque on it, or signs of mold appear. It is also unacceptable for another person to use the brush, the dentist added.
