The 57-year-old racer faces a long recovery ahead.
More than 12 years after a severe injury sustained while skiing in the Alps, legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher is no longer bedridden — he is slowly recovering and can now move in a wheelchair with the help of nurses, reports the Daily Mail.
Citing several informed sources, Daily Mail columnist Jonathan McEvoy, who visited the Schumacher estate, reported that the 57-year-old German racer is under round-the-clock supervision from a team of nurses and therapists, whose services cost the Schumacher family tens of thousands of pounds a week. His wife Corinna, with whom the racer has been married for 30 years, is also by his side.
The article notes that Schumacher still cannot walk or speak; however, his current health condition allows him to be transported around the house in a wheelchair. This news is described as "the most positive medical assessment that can be provided."
The racer lives in a private estate in Mallorca worth around £30 million (over $40 million), as well as in an even more expensive mansion in Glan on the shores of Lake Geneva worth £50 million ($68 million).
Earlier, there were rumors that the former athlete suffers from locked-in syndrome, also known as pseudocoma. This neurological condition leaves the patient conscious and fully aware of what is happening but able to respond only by blinking. Sources have dismissed this assumption, stating that even this grim version "does not correspond to reality."
"You can't be sure that he understands everything because he can't tell anyone anything. There is a sense that he understands some of what is happening around him, but probably not everything," one source said on condition of anonymity.
Since the tragic incident at the ski resort in the French Alps, Schumacher has not appeared in public. The legendary racer suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in December 2013, after which his life has been completely hidden from public view.
The journalist emphasizes that over the years, not a single photo reflecting the current state of the racer has surfaced. Attempts by some former employees to sell photographs of Schumacher have led to legal battles.
