Ophthalmologist Dementyev urged against using tea bags for eye treatment.

Ophthalmologist Dmitry Dementyev evaluated the effectiveness of compresses made from tea bags in treating eyes.

The discussion was about how to treat dry eye syndrome — a condition where insufficient tear fluid is produced, leading to symptoms such as stinging, burning, itching, and redness of the eyes. Dementyev noted that many people use folk remedies to alleviate this condition.

For instance, the ophthalmologist mentioned that some people instill chamomile tea, lavender oil, or honey into their eyes. Dementyev urged against this practice, as these liquids not only fail to relieve unpleasant symptoms but may also cause allergies and worsen the condition. Additionally, he advised against using onion juice in the eyes, as recommended by another folk remedy. "How can onion help? When there are very few tears, you can simply hold it or smell it. The tear gland will start to work more actively," he emphasized.

Finally, the doctor opposed the use of tea bag compresses. "Tea bags won’t help. It’s unknown what is in those bags. (...) So we throw them in the trash," concluded Dementyev.
