The adjective 'parasocial' has been named the word of 2025 by the Cambridge Dictionary.

The word 'parasocial' refers to a one-sided emotional connection that an individual feels towards a celebrity, a character from literature or film, or artificial intelligence.

In the dictionary's statement for 2025, examples of its usage are provided: 'parasocial relationships' refer to the interaction between an artist and their fan, while 'parasocial grief' refers to the experience of loss after the death of a public figure.

Previously, the words 'skibidi', 'tradwife', 'delulu', and 'broligarchy', which began to be used on TikTok, were added to the updated version of the Cambridge Dictionary. 'Internet culture is changing the English language, and it is very exciting to observe this effect and document it in the dictionary,' said Colin McIntosh, head of the lexicography program. He noted that only those words that maintain their relevance make it into the dictionary.
